A lot of homeowners think of their garage doors as nothing more than a convenience. They can tap a button in their car and the door opens, allowing them to pull their car inside. Once the door is closed and they are inside of their house, the garage usually doesn’t get another thought. However, it is an integral part of the home and is typically being used almost every day. Having that said, it needs to be regularly maintained in order to prevent costly headaches in the future.
Inspect & Clean
One of the easiest things to maintain on a garage door is the sensors; which can be found at the bottom of the door frame on both sides. It is important to keep them clean, so wipe them down frequently!
To ensure that the sensors are aligned, stick something such as a brick or beam of wood under the door while it’s open. When the door begins to close and touches the object, it should lift back up, freeing the article that was placed there. If it does not and the sensors have been wiped down, sweep any debris that might be around the sensors and door before trying to close it again. Each sensor should be equipped with a light that turns on when they are properly aligned. It is very important that the sensors on your garage door are working as they should.
Check & Replace
The next maintenance task should be too easy to miss, but often gets overlooked. If you haven’t already guessed it, the light bulbs in the garage door opener should be checked regularly! There should be a light bulb socket on either side of your garage door opener; ensuring that they are always in working order goes a long way to keep both vehicles (and people!) safe. Without working lights, there is a risk of either hitting something in the garage or not seeing an intruder that might be lurking around.
While you’re at it, don’t forget to replace the batteries in those remotes! Routinely swapping out old batteries will prevent the inconvenience of being temporarily locked out of your garage.
